This is an exquisitely conceived and executed Volcano-Panel by Peter Matzhold. It’s from the collection of Ed Jurkiewicz one of of America’s early artisan makers. His pipes were called “E. Andrew.” Ed passed away this last January and I’ve been asked to sell the collection.
I’m aware, of course, that Peter Matzhold is Austrian and not German or Danish, but I didn’t want this beauty to get lost on the “Other Briars” page. The stem is Cumberland and free of tooth marks. Finish is virtually flawless. Beautiful birdseye on the base of the bowl. Nomenclature could be stronger but is entirely legible. “3” is I believe a size designation. The grade is “F.” Matzhold’s grading runs from “A” to “G” (ascending) plus is highest grade, “CU.” There is evidence of hot smoking in the form of a small area of alligatoring at the left front of the chamber. The pipe will come in a leather “E. Andrew” pipe bag.
